Puerto Rican League Against Cancer:
The Puerto Rican League Against Cancer (LPCC) is a non-profit organization founded on April 9, 1938, under the vision of Dr. Isaac González Martínez. With the concept of volunteerism he managed to establish the first oncology clinic on the island. Dr. Gonzalez's dedication in the field of research led to far-reaching discoveries on a worldwide level, when he discovered the bilharzia worms, a disease originating in Africa, which was the first description of this condition in the Americas. His greatest challenge was the disease of cancer and his efforts to provide medical services and treatment for this condition are examples to emulate of commitment to the welfare of his people. Under the management of the LPCC, the first hospital specialised in cancer in Puerto Rico was inaugurated on 29 December 1962 on the premises of the Medical Centre, named after Dr. Isaac González Martínez, the first oncologist in Puerto Rico.
Mission:
The mission of the Puerto Rican League Against Cancer and its Oncology Hospital is to provide professional health services to cancer patients, aimed at improving their quality of life through integrated programmes of prevention, medical care, education and scientific research.
Vision:
The Puerto Rican League Against Cancer aspires for its Oncology Hospital, Dr. Isaac Gonzalez Martinez to be the leading non-profit community Institution in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, dedicated to cancer care founded on the excellence of its services and sustained by prevention, education and scientific research.
