ACCREDITATIONS




A scientific and educational association of board-certified surgeons founded in 1913 in the city of Chicago, Illinois. Its main objective is to promote excellence in quality and care based on the establishment of the highest standards of practice for hospitals and hospital institutions in patient care. The programs and initiatives created are the accreditations that govern the healthcare system in the world.

Our institution was recognized by this entity in 1951 and received certification in January 1952.


This program was created by the American College of Surgeons and began in 1922. It is comprised of a consortium of health professional organizations dedicated to maximizing the levels of survival and quality of service for patients with cancer disease. To this end, this program establishes a rigorous methodology of quality guidelines, metrics and monitoring in order to offer specialized services for cancer patients.

This accreditation allows us as an institution to have direct access to a wealth of resources, information, tools, new study options and innovative treatments in oncology, which makes us part of an elite international group of more than 1,500 entities throughout the United States and Europe.

It is a non-profit organization in the U.S. founded in 1951 by the American College of Surgeons, which aims to administer an accreditation program for hospitals and health care institutions. Its main objective is to evaluate the aforementioned under rigorous standardized guidelines establishing operational elements aimed at excellence in patient care, providing safe, effective and high quality services. It is the oldest national organization with the most extensive standards and accrediting body in health services, serving more than 22,000 hospital institutions. In the case of Puerto Rico, out of 63 hospitals in existence, 44 of them are accredited by the Joint Commission. Since 1965, the U.S. Congress approved that in order to comply with the requirements to participate in the Medicare and Medicaid Program, it is imperative to obtain this accreditation.

The Oncology Hospital obtained its first accreditation in 1961 and we keep it active today.


The American College of Radiology (ACR) was founded in 1924. This initiative allowed the application of new techniques in accordance with radiological technological advances in the treatment of patients. On the other hand, it gave way for the profession of radiology to be recognized as a medical specialty at the national level. Currently there are 54 chapters throughout the U.S.

The Radiological Society of Puerto Rico is a non-profit entity and is the representative body of all radiologists certified by the Medical Examining Board of P.R. On March 21, 2002, it was incorporated in alliance as "The Puerto Rico Chapter of the American College of Radiology".

Our Imaging Center's mammography services have been in existence since 1996, and was accredited in 1998, when this accreditation became mandatory.


The "Joint Commission Laboratory Accreditation" is another program of the American College of Surgeons, which was created in 1975 and in its beginnings was only for hospitals, it is not until 1995 that it covers independent laboratory services. The parameters of this accreditation focuses on the establishment of guidelines oriented in the operational system, focused on the evaluation processes, sample collection and practices to obtain accurate, safe and quality results.

As a requirement, these processes must also comply with CLIA regulations, 1988 federal legislation that applies to all U.S. facilities.

Our hospital has held this accreditation for more than 40 years.


INTERNSHIP PROGRAM ACCREDITATION

The Licensing Board was created under Act 139 of August 1, 2008, as a repeal of Act 22 of April 22, 1931, which originally created the Medical Examining Board of P. R., attached to the Office of Regulation and Certification of Health Professionals of the Department of Health, and the Medical Internship Program of P. R. The first Medical Internship in Puerto Rico dates back to 1912 and was established in 1912. The First Medical Internship in Puerto Rico dates back to 1912 and was located at the Municipal Hospital of the Capital (1875), a mecca of medical education in Puerto Rico, whose building was relocated in 1909 to De Diego Avenue in Santurce. The first medical intern was Dr. Pedro Malaret Tió, who in 1944 was the Medical Director of the Hospital de La Liga of Dr. Isaac González Martínez at Calle del Parque #226.

Our institution had its first internship in 1985. 1985.


CERTIFICATION OF OSTOMATES

The Ostomy Clinic of the Oncology Hospital has Mrs. Elsa Iris Santiago Class, certified in this specialty since October 12, 1970 from the "Rosswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center Institute" of Buffalo, New York, which is the first institution with a cancer focus in the world. This surgical technique was created in 1958 at this institution by Dr. Rupert Turnbull, Jr. (1913-1981), considered the Father of Sterostomal Therapy worldwide. Mrs. Elsa is recognized by the Board of Nurse Examiners of P.R. as the First Esterostomal Nurse of the island. Currently, the certifications come from the organization, "Wound, Ostomy, Continuance Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB).

This clinic in the facilities of the Oncology Hospital has been in alliance with the American Cancer Society for more than 9 years.


WOUND AND SKIN CARE CERTIFICATION

The Oncology Hospital has Mr. Ariel Francisco Cirino Iglesisas, certified by the Accreditation Board of "Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society" since June 22, 2013. This society was founded in 1968, where it created the Accrediting Board for 1978. This certification includes accreditations from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC); California Board of Registered Nursing (CBRN); and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). In addition to these certifications, she has been awarded several by the Board of Nursing Examiners of P.R. (2016), the School of Nursing of the Medical Sciences Campus of the UPR (2016) "Bio-Skills Lab ACELITY Latin America" (2017) and "Smith and Nephew Professional Education" (2019) of "Wound Management Division".
